To Sit is to Time Travel 2022
To Sit is to Time Travel (2022), a fourteen-minute companion tour commissioned by the MAK Center for Art & Architecture for the Schindler House’s one-hundredth birthday.
When invited to create an interpretive audio tour for this historic house’s centennial celebration, I decided to respond to a curious absence for the present day visitor: seating. Inspired by two genres of descriptive writing, ekphrastic poetry and alt text, my nine-stop tour is composed of poetic descriptions of various seating and their embodied potential as found in historic photographs of the house prior to institutional stewardship in 1980.
